Episode 1
In a series of dispatches, We Are From Here documents the first days of curfew from their neighborhood Kompannavidiya (slave island) through forced silence creeping in, struggles for daily rations and a suspended street economy. The challenges of obtaining daily essentials and the generosity of residents in connecting to one another, also on behalf of relatives in disparate areas continues. The Lotus Tower, funded by China as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, turns red as a tribute to health workers, yet it also sounds as an alarm bell for the challenges amidst us.

In the last dispatch by We Are From Here composed over several weeks, interactions across the neighbourhood are portrayed during Ramazan and Vesak. During the months of fasting, radio gains prominence over television for the Muslim community and so the airwaves and popular music become a pronounced soundtrack in this episode. Celebrations are personalized, quiet and contained, yet hints of seasonal change emerge as restrictions eased. A young neighbour writes letters in Sinhala to the Grama Niladhari on the subject of delayed compensations under the guidance of her mother.
